bare root - pot or plant in ground?

I received several bare root Sorbet peonies and was wondering if it would be better initially to plant them in pots and after the plants have grown over the summer , transplant them into the ground in the fall or next spring. Or , is it better to go ahead and put them into the ground now even though it is mid May. I am in the middle Tennessee area and summers can get hot and dry.

Most folks advise potting them and planting in the fall, provided you generally are successful with potted plants. If you have several, you could simply plant one in the ground now and pot all the others, saving them for a fall planting. Then, you can definitely say you tried both ways and let us know from your own experience how they compared.
