exchanging peony spot, experts?

I want to put a red peony in the same spot that I now have a pink peony, which I will take out. I read the following:
"never plant peonies back in the same location unless you have replaced with new soil. Remove 1 cubic foot of old dirt and replace with new dirt."

That's alot of dirt. Do I really have to do this? I was planning on digging up the red peony with as much soil as possible. It is 3 years old. The pink one that I will move is 3 years old also. I will do it in the fall of course.

Any time I dig and remove a plant, a large plant such as a peony, I take the opportunity to add compost to the area. Al

Thanks for responding but will it be alright to put a peony in the same spot that a different one was growing? I have never known anyone that has done this and was hoping it will be alright.

I would plant a new peony in the same location I had removed an old peony. I am presuming the old plant did not suffer from disease. Peonies like a rich soil with lots of compost worked into it. This is the only time you will be able to dig deeply and work in the compost. Al

Thanks. I guess I just needed some one to say it would be all right.I don't know of anyone that has ever done this, it even stumped my local nursery people. No disease on either plant. I'll dig as deep as I can and work in the compost.
