Peony fertilizer and maintenance

I've got several peony plants, and they seem to be spreading. This is a good thing.

They have nice green foliage most of the year, and big white blossoms for a week or so this time of year.

Am I correct in assuming (after doing a search on "fertilizer") that the peonies don't really need fertilizer? Some of mine are mulched, and some aren't.

I've noticed that other white peonies in the neighborhood keep their blossoms for much longer (weeks) than mine. Mine usually last a week or so at most. Is this just a difference in the variety of peony?
