Planting Peonies in Spring..

Hi
I know this is not the best time for planting peonies.. But I received some for Mothers day in a black potted 2 gal container.

Do I leave them in the containter for the summer or plant them? I could plant them in the fall.. like October.

If I leave them in the container do I put them part way in the ground to keep them cool?
Do I put them in partial shade (if I leave them in the container)?

or should I prepare the site for them and plant them out?
Will they need to be covered from the heat of the summer for this year if they are planted?

thanks.. I need step by step so I don't kill them.

I am also interested in hearing your response as I just picked up a peony myself today and would like to plant it before fall. Golden

All of the peonies we ever bought were planted in full sun in the beginning of spring. Now is fine too. Plant them where you want them to be. You won't get flowers this year and then next year they should come out with a flower (hopefully)! They usually take a couple years to start flowering heavily. Remember not to plant them too deep...or you will just get leaves and no blooms! G'luck.

Potted peonies can be planted anytime, because they are already growing in dirt (in the pot). It is the bareroot ones that need to be planted in the fall, so they have time to put out roots in the cool seasons before they try and leaf out.
