I received two tiny but healthy rockiis from Gintas Malisauskas (hope that's spelled right) a few years ago. They bloomed this year for the first time and they are gorgeous!
Absolutely! I missed last year's seed because we had to be away during the time they ripened. But I had great success with the seed from my older rockii the year before.
Maybe great success is the wrong phrase.... I'm down to only five survivors. I lost two more to evil tree rats this spring and another was accidentally buried under a five foot high pile of mulch. Mortality has been high. But I now have a lot more experience in what not to do.
This is my first rockii. I bought it from people who imported plants from China. Its foliage is coarser than the newer ones from peonynursery.com
I think we talked about this last year Dave--sounds good.
Ran across the correspondence with Gintas and I rec'd the rockiis in fall 2006. That means it took them the same amount of time to bloom as it did the first rockii from China even though that one was much larger when I planted it.
Dave, my tree peonies don't seem to be setting seed this year. The pods have black flecks instead of seeds. There was only one pod that had a seed on my oldest rockii. One large seed took up the entire pod--about triple the size of the seeds from 2 years ago. So far everything else has been just black flecks.
Are there good and bad years for peony seed? What have been other people's experiences?
That may be true for the ones in the pictures but the bigger Chinese rockii set seed 2 years ago. Last year I don't know about.
Our rainfall has been average this year but came in the form of floods followed by drought. Maybe next year I'll try to help the pollination process along myself.
Thank you for your generous offer of seeds but wait and see if you can get a better deal for yourself. I do have the one giant seed to play with. If you do wind up with some extras though I'll be happy to take a few and hope that I can reciprocate next year.
