Black Leaves on Peonies

My sister called me to ask me about her and her neighbor's peonies that get black leaves after blooming.

I did a search on this forum, but couldn't find a definitive answer. It's definitely not too much rain because we've had dry summers lately and this spring we've had less rainfall than usual.

My peonies stay green until September, so I don't have the problem and didn't know what to recommend, except a fungicide. I don't use chemicals myself, but gave her the recipe for the baking soda fungicide, hoping that will help.

Anybody else have the problem? I always thought peonies were pretty disease and insect free, but evidently not. (Except for the ants, but they're normal and don't hurt the plant. And they don't attract ants into the home!)

She may want to look at the surounding plants. It sounds like she may have a problem with the plants having good air circulation. You could also suggest a copper sulfate such as Bourdoux sp Mixture applied to the plant as it emerges from the ground.

But is it a fungus?

Yes, it is probably a fungus. But which one I don't know. Have them remove the leaves and stems this fall. Then next spring spray or dust with bourdoux mixture. I spelled it wrong but a garden center will know what they are looking for.
