Help! Did I ruin my peonies somehow?

This is my first time growing peonies. I just bought a house with a few clumps that I transplanted and a neighbor gave me two giant clumps.

They were growing just fine until about a week ago. All of the clumps were about 1 ft. tall and had small round buds on them. In each clump, a few shoots did have leaves that were curling and that didn't look healthy.

Now, each peony clump has only one or two buds that have grown to be about 1 inch in diameter. Almost all of the other buds stayed pea-size and seem to have blackened. The leaves are also curling on those shoots with the dead buds.

The only thing that I can think of that I could have done wrong is to throw some organic rose fertilizer on them. Could that have killed them? Will they come back next year?

I should note that the soil is clay and that I have added some leaf mold to it. I should also note that they've gotten a lot of water lately.

I would appreciate any advice! Thanks!
