admiring a peony

I drove by a house that had a huge gorgeous peony last year. The plant was close to the house, flowers were white with yellowish centers. But the plant was almost 4' tall!!! And that wide. I'm wondering if I have the guts to beg for a few cuttings??!! Any suggestions on how to start a peony? Or am I just better off to continue to admire from afar? I don't know anything about it, but it was beautiful! And I want it...LOL I haven't seen it this year because I haven't driven by that house. But I'm going to... so hold me back....!!!

As far as I know you can not start Peonies from cuttings - you must divide the actual plant. But I dont see anything wrong with asking the person what variety it is and going out and buying one? Absolutely noting is wrong with that - for the most part Gardeners love to talk about their garden so asking the gardener I doubt would be a problem. Golden
