I bought this peony at Walmart about 5 years ago. the label called it a "Duchess DeNamur" but I have googled the name and I have not come up with a thing about it. Has anyone here ever heard of it?
The bloom is GORGEOUS! It is about 7" diameter with a very sweet smell. It bloomed this week, and I hope this link will take you to the picture I took yesterday.

Looks great. Try 'Duchess de Nemours'

It IS a 'Duchesse de Nemours' how wonderful of you!
Thanks so much! My house is up for sale, and one of the conditions of the sale is that come early next spring, if the house is sold, I am taking the Duchess with me! I know they don't like transplants but maybe if I dig it wide and deep it will survive a move. This is my favorite plant in the world.
Thanks again for this info :)

I have a Duchesse de Nemours, too. It does smell glorious!!
I've read peonies don't like to be moved, but I moved my Duchesse in fall, and it bloomed the next spring. If you're able, move it in fall.

RE: Duchess may be Festive Maxima?

I just looked at your photo - it looks more like Festiva Maxima to me, which also smells divine.

I'm quite certain that picture is not of a Duchesse de Nemours. Duchesse de Nemours is a peony which has pure white buds and opens with pure white outer petals and white inner ones that have a creamy glow. That picture shows some pink, which you will never see in a Duchesse de Nemours. Don't know what else it is though.

I agree. I also don't think that picture is of "Duchesse de Nemours". Take a look at the link below. It is the "Duchesse de Nemours" page on the Peony Databank web site. There are many pictures on this page from several sources.

"Duchesse de Nemours" is not pink at all. It is a creamy white.

Wal-Mart is notorious for selling mislabeled peonies. If you just want a surprise peony for a cheap price Wal-Mart is the way to go. If you need something specific, it will cost you a bit more, but a peony grower is the way to go. Wal-Mart is a great place to start a love affair with peonies for cheap. Once you become addicted and need to add more specific varieties, there are several peony growers who can help you!

The one you have is very beautiful however, and looks like a duchess to me! It's nice to have a fragrant one too.
