I am not over knowledgeable...please correct me if I am mistaken...but I read if you stick them close together for a nice look now. That when they mature you risk fungus and also death of plant attempting to transplant it elsewhere...that it takes about three years to fully appreciate them.

As to planting...my step mom said she bought one in the summer and planted it...it came back just fine this spring. Buds on it already.

Again...just what I have read and was told...absolutely not an expert by any means...

They can make quite a bit of new shoots on their 2nd year so I don't think you need multiple plants unless you want to plant them in different locations.

Here's a picture of my bartzella producing 15 new shoots this year, and it was originally a 2 stem plant last year.

Steve.....I read your post after I went out and bought a second one! But they are so pretty, I wouldn't mind having 2!
They did have a better deal on bigger ones, but they didn't have any blossoms on them, and I was afraid they wouldn't be the same as their picture, so I went with another smaller one that I knew was the white one. I love its simplicity.

You can plant them now. I bought mine on clearance last summer. It did nothing all season long. It did stay green. This Spring, it it up and full and green (2-3 times last year's planting size) with a number of buds. Hope they bloom before the deer show up.

Do the deer like them? We have alot of deer and they never seemed to bother the 2 old peonies I have.
