Forcing peony buds to open

I have placed several peony stems with buds in my fridge. I can just see the color of the flower, but mostly there is still green covering the bud. How can I get these buds to come into full bloom? Is placing them in warm water the only thing which is necessary to "force" them to bloom? THANK YOU!

Unless you wait until the peony buds reach the "marshmallow" stage (entire bud feels soft like the consistency of a marshmallow, no hard center)they will never open. At the marshmallow stage, you can store them dry (wrapped in newspaper is good) in refrigerator temps (about 45 is better than 40) for weeks.
