Red Tree Peony Changing Colors

My friend has a tree peony that was pure red. This season it started putting out beautiful flowers that look like candy cane peonies. What could be making this happen? It is breathtakingly beautiful. I tried to post a picture but didn't know how. If someone could explain the procedure to post a picture I think you would be impressed w/this peony.

I don't know how old your friend's peony is...its possible as it has matured it is blooming more true to form. Is it a Shimanishiki (Japanese) tree peony? Flower color can vary on that one.

Thank you for your responses. I don't know how old Bev's tree peony is but w/find out.

You're welcome. I've seen pictures where the tree peony I mentioned has both red blooms and blooms mixed w/red/white.
