First timer with Peonies

I planted Peony bulbs about 10 day ago in a container. It looks like the is a stem or a wooden stick coming up out of the soil is this normal? Have I done something wrong? Please help!!!

Peonies grow from roots, not bulbs, and the shoot you are seeing is the normal growth. Take care of it in the container where it may suffer from too hot roots. Shade the container if possible from the sun and don't let it dry out. I hope you have a spot in the garden to plant in the fall, they do better in the garden. Al
