dividing peonies

i used a shovel to cut part of a plant to divide it. when i pulled the part of the plant out of the hole i noticed i cut off a large root coming from the main plant. will this kill the plant or will the root grow new plants

The old plant minus some root should recover OK. The new division if you have some growth points should also be OK. It would have been a lot less stressful on both if you had done this when the plant was dormant. Al
