peony cultivation

Hi,

Does anyone here on this forum know the value of cultivating around a peony plant? I have heard it is good to take a small hand hoe and cultivate lightly all around and about 6 inches away from the crown of the peony. Is this helpful at all? I have been doing it for several years now, and I have had good peonies. Is it because of the cultivation?

RE: peony cultivation

I don't really know, but I have never cutivated around any of my peonies, just weed whacked the grass around them and they do just fantastic. The plants get larger every year and get scads of blooms... then down in the fall, when the leaves start to get kind of funky, I mow them with the rider. no fuss no muss.
