Can I cut back the foliage without hurting the plants?

My peonies have bloomed, and they were spectacular. They amaze me every year!

They are in borders which is where I have the most sun in my yard. The rest of my yard is mostly shady, much to my chagrin. I would love to use the space being taken up by the peony foliage to plant perennials/annuals. But I don't want to hurt the peonies.

If I cut them back before fall, will it hurt them?

Thanks, and to all of you just enjoying your blooms now, enjoy!

Your peony grows large tubers storing the energy provided by the foliage. Removing the foliage will cut off this supply and reduce the vitality of the plant, so I would not recommend doing it. Al
