What's wrong with this young peony?

| A friend is asking me about a problem with a young peony and I told her I'd ask the experts. I thank you in advance.
She planted three peony "eyes" last fall that were purchased at a nearby bulb grower. They are planted within 4 feet of one another. Soil is good...other plants in the bed do well. The bed gets afternoon shade. One plant looks great...about a foot tall, dark green leaves and healthy looking. The second one looks normal except the color is more yellow green. The third one doesn't look normal at all. It's about 8 inches tall, with very small, elongated leaves that are curled from one side of the leaf to the other...sort of like a boat shape. This particular little plant has been shaded by some poppies this spring, but those are coming out. Could it be because it hasn't had enough sun? Can anyone give me any idea of what may be going on...especially with the most abnormal plant? Thanks!

| Are they all the same cultivar. Different cultivars have different colored leaves. Wait a while to see. If the grower is near ask the grower to come view the plants and give suggestions. In another group the curling was discussed and may be from a nematode in the leaf but without seeing the plants it is hard to tell. |

| Concerning the one with curled leaves that is rather short...I had the same thing last year with a bare root that I planted. It was very short with the curly leaves, but this year it grew taller and looks fine. I think its something that's more prone to happen with smaller/younger rootings, but in my experience, its nothing to be too concerned about. |

| You can also check this link. It sounds like it may be something viral, as referenced by the last paragraph of this link: http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG1153.html |
