Spindly stems

My peonies are growing very quickly but are very spindly. They have buds on the tops of the stems but I don't know how they'll support the buds much longer. Could they be lacking something? Should we fertilize peonies? My mom grew beautiful peonies and I'm pretty sure she never fertilized them once!

Peonies should be planted in the full sun. Too much shade will cause spindly stems. I don't think fertilizer is the problem. Al
