Can I plant peonies w/ my roses?

Posted by brandyray Coastal NC (My Page) on

I remember our gorgeous peonies when I was growing up- white ones- festiva maxima probably, and medium and dark pink ones- all double and large. And I have always wanted to have some of my own. The soil here is sandy and acidic, and the weather is hot- zone 8a. I am planning to fix a bed for a climbing rose and want to know if the soil requirements would be compatible for peonies?
Also, maybe someone can suggest some good places to order peonies and an outstanding red single? (The rose is a deep yellow in color, "amber ginger" according to the description- so whatever I plant w/ it should provide some contrast.) Thanks for your help! Brandy

Peonies like the same growing conditions as roses. I have mine in separate rows next to each other. I did have them mixed, but the peonies got too big and crowded the roses. Al

Great! Thank you, Al. I plan to plant a climbing rose and put in a trellis, then plant maybe a bush rose and 2 or 3 peonies on the other side of the bed.
I just ordered Song Sparrow's catalog- I have seen them recommended several places.
What kind of peonies do you have or are there any you would recommend? I am partial to the dramatic ones- red singles w/ yellow centers, red doubles, etc. Thanks, Brandy

I have a related question, I have a row of very nice established peonies. I would like to change this bed, and put a row of knockout roses next to the peonies row. Any opinions as to whether they would complement each other?

Right now I have bearded irises next to the peonies, but have been having trouble with diseases the the last few years, and I think I am ready to move on, and move the irises out.

Thanks!

The Knockout rose is a good choice as it blooms over a long season(which the peony does not), it stays small and is very disease resistant. The Siberian Iris works well as a companion plant with the peony as it blooms at the same time and requires no care at all. Be careful to not crowed the peonies or you could be encouraging disease.
