Does dormant eye bud division work for tree peonies?

So far I have managed to get tiny plants to grow from both herbaceous and itoh peonies by simply taking the dormant eye buds in the spring, coating them with a rooting gel, and then planting them 3/4 of the way into my home made potting soil for peonies. The plants that are generated appear to be larger than typical 1st year seedlings, and there's no need for a double dormancy. They tend to first generate leaves, and then send down roots.

Has anyone ever attempted this with tree peonies and succeeded at it?

I do not think it would work with Tree Peonies. The eyes on TP are located on branches, not on roots. Branches have different cell structure.

That's what I have always thought before, but when I look at grafted tree peonies, I'm finding that the underground part of the branch gradually changes its cell structure to look more like a tuber that can hold energy and generate roots. Too bad I don't have any dormant buds to try out, but I believe the base of a bud may have the same properties as a branch.

I believe it's a possibility, and the one advantage I can see with this type of a division if it is possible with tree peonies is a guaranteed species as opposed to seeds which can have variation.

I plan on trying it out with a few sample TP buds.
