Too Hot in New England...now what?

Posted by rompar98 6 West Mass (My Page) on

I am in West Mass and we are in the middle of our first heat wave (way too early if you ask me). On Saturday and Sunday morning I went into my garden and picked some gorgeous buds and flowers from my peonys that were just starting to bloom. My bloom period usually last 2 weeks or so.

Well it was so hot yesterday (100 - yuk) that when I got home my beautiful buds had all popped fully open and now look crinkly and wilted. I gave them a good drink this am but we are in for another 100 degree day. Any hope or is my season over? Should I be doing anything special for them long term?

rompar98, we had a very unusual heatwave here in NE Ohio too, and we were "only" up to 94F!!! Nothing compared to yours, I guess! Sigh...

Anyway, my peonies only lasted for about 5 days in total... sob! The heat forced the buds to pop open, and then within a few days, they were brown around the edges and then the petals just started to fall off!!!

And I waited all these months just for a few days of exceptional beauty.... sigh!

I know what you mean. We always get your weather a day later. Oh well, time to clean up and move on. Now I know to take my pictures right away :)
