moving large tree peony

I have a tree peony, about 5' high, by 4' wide. It is a red Icanus(Daphnis) according to garden records given to me by the previous homeowner. We want to expand our garage in a couple of years, and it will need to be moved. I'm thinking it would be more manageable to move just part of it. Someone told me they have a special sort of tap root to cut. I would welcome some expert advice.

The person you need to talk to is Rick Rogers at Brothers Tree Peony www.treony.com He has a landscaping business and advises many of the known gardens on how to care for their tree peonies. There is a grower in PA that might be able to help but I can't find the name right now.

One thing he will need to know is it on a single stem or multi stem plant. Lucky you if multi stem you may have extra plants. Icanus is some what hard to find so your local civic or private botanical garden might be a good place to give some of the extras.

Thank you, I will track down Rick. It was probably grafted by Mr. Gratwick who lived in this area (Pavilion/Linwood/Rochester NY )until his passing. It is a multi stem plant, so I still have hopes of moving just part of it. I will also let Rochester Civic Garden Center and Highland Park in Rochester know of availability.
