Tree Peony with herbaceous peony buds growing

HI:

I have a tree peony that I planted two years ago. It has five blooms and seems very healthy. My concern is that I noticed it has some herbaceous peony buds that have grown from the base of the plant this year.

I was wondering if someone could please advise as to the best method of removing the herbaceous peony shoots. Should it be done now or wait until fall? Should I dig up the peony tree to remove the herbaceous roots or just try pulling them off similar to the technique for a sucker on a rose?

Break the shoots off in the short term. Long term solution should involve increasing the depth that the herbaceous root stock resides. You can do this by either increasing the grade by ~2" or digging up and replanting ~2" deeper. The tree peony will begin to grow its own roots and the herbaceous stock will be deep enough that it doesn't send up shoots.

Thank you very much for your replies, I have removed the two herbaceous suckers and will also increase the grade.

In future, I will be mindful of planting any tree peony deeper.
