pruning painted peonies

This is my first year of planting peonies ( herbaceous ), after envying a lot of other folks yards. I planted in the spring & they flourished for a couple of months...until my husband decided that the front porch ( which is the back side of the flower bed) needed painting. He spray painted the porch, along with my peonies and roses. The peonies have ceased to grow, as I'm sure the paint cut off any oxygen to the leaves and stems. I know that when you lop a tree branch, you paint it so it won't grow back ~ what do I do about this? I've got 10 plants, all were affected. Should I cut them down to the ground now so they won't totally die, wait til fall, or are they doomed? Any help will br greatly appreciated. Thanks

RE: pruning painted peonies

I would not do anything right now. They will have enough green wood, stems and not affected leaves, to carry them through to the fall. Cutting them down now would take that away. Next years growth may not be as robust as normal, but they will survive. Al
