transplanting in zone 3

i have 3 huge fern leaf, 2 large pink double flowering and 1 young white double with "wilt". I am wanting to take these with me to my new home which is yet to be built and may not be for a year or so. I know it is not ideal but my plans are to make the move after they finish blooming say july.

should I---

1- cut back, dig and pot up so i can keep watered and an eye on it? then winter the pot if necessary in the garage

2- cut back and transplant to a worked up area at the end of our trees on the property and move from there to house location when finally built? this area is mostly full sun and water could be sporadic unless raining

3- cut back and transplant to a friends garden and again move once home built?

RE: transplanting in zone 3

Can you transplant to its final location at the new house site? Not against the house but out back in the yard where it won't get run over.

I would dig, divide, then pot one division, put another division at the new site, another to the friends garden, and another back where the originals were. If one fails, you have backups.

Here is a link that might be useful: All you ever wanted to know about digging and dividing peonies
