Tomato red peony?

Is there such a thing?

I planted six Red Magic because the picture on the tag looked promising.

They are intense magenta, and very happy!

I don't like magenta and they're impossible in the bed I planted them in.

Now that they have to be moved, I'm planning a whole new area around them

and a bunch of existing Minuet lilacs, Weigela wine and roses, oriental Poppies

"Royal wedding" and dark blue/purple Clematis, maybe Jackmann

and am horrified and fascinated. It's all about the company :o)

Meanwhile, I need to replace them with someting big, russet or tomato red

flowering now, early June. I've searched online and haven't come up with much so far.

And I don't trust the pictures anymore!

Is there such a thing (under $40.00 each!) or should I go with bearded Iris?

You should go to a peony breeders display gardens and check out the peonies first hand. That way you know what you're getting. Check and see if there is a peony garden near where you live and go take a look.

Even though it is not tomato red, how about burgundy red? Try 'Port Royale' peony a lovely Japanese flower shape herbaceous peony.

I planted 3 different "red" peonies and waited to see them bloom only to find out that my idea of red is completely different, and their idea of red did not mix in at ALL with the color scheme I was going for. Buckeye Belle is a nice dark red, and hot chocolate is an even darker, more maroon color. Happy hunting!

Buckeye Bell is beautiful! I will definitely plant it.

Like the original poster, I'm looking for a true red, NOT pink or fuschia. Dark red or maroon like the Buckeye Bell is fine! I don't know where to look locally so I've been looking online. Some other very dark reds online seem to be Peter Brand, Uncle Tom, Matilda Lewis. Can anyone comment on the red color of those or some lighter reds (as they appear in catalogs anyway): Red Red Rose, Renown, Cardinal's Robe... any other candidates for a true or tomato red?

Love the Buckeye Bell. I don't know if I have a true red yet since mine only went in the ground in 2009 and only the Sherbet has bloomed so far. I hope you find one though. I hope to add a double yellow and double orange to my peonies grouping before I die but bother of them are prohibitively expensive.
