Help with Peony that doesn't like the heat

I have a couple of peony plants the the original parent plant dates back to around 1920 or so they are red but I don't know what kind they are just that my mother loved them dearly and I've had them since she died. I live in an appartment and so have had to put them in pots instead of a bed. In the summer the leaves get really ugly fast my patio faces west so they get the bulk of the hot afternoon sun. I have a friend who has offered to "peony sit" cause she has a house and a nice yard. I am afraid to transplant them at this time of year but I'm also afraid if I leave them thru the summer they will die. I lost one last year and only have two left. Since I don't have access to the parent plant anymore I don't know if I can replace them. Any help would be great! They look somewhat like a Karl Rosenfeld but I'm not sure if that type is old enough to be the same thing.
