Good idea.
Seeds must be collected into moist peat as soon as pod splits open.
Hopefully I will have some cross-pollinated and some self-pollinated seeds.

So far I have plenty of little seedlings left from last year's rockii seed, so I would be willing to trade some of this years seed for something different. I also have seed pods on 2 of the suffruticosas (probably a mistake since they are so young.) This was a first bloom for both of them.

I tried feng dan bai seed from a trade this spring, but since the seed had dried out, only 2 have put out roots.

I would like to get some rockii seed; growing from seed should beat paying $200 for a root!

I won't have any exotic peony seed to trade, but will have seed saved fro numerous different named lilacs that bloomed for me the first time this season. All the lilacs were purchased and 'not' grown from seed, if anyone 'might' be interested in swapping.

Hi Sue, I've never heard of anyone other than a breeder growing lilacs from seed. I have 3 different lilacs, all given to me as rooted suckers. However if you are thinking about propagating yours from seed, who knows...the next fabulous fad to hit the plant world might be the chemocurl lilac!

Dave, the huge prices reliable nurseries charge for rockiis make me think they have to be older before they bloom. Maybe they don't graft well? Last year's seed had a germination rate that was awesome but they don't keep growing throughout the season the way other plants do. They are still seedlings. Time=money, I guess.

Yes, tp seedlings are agonizingly slow growers, get maybe 3 inches tall in first year.

tp's may be slow but are worth the wait. they will bloom in about 3-4yrs. depening on how much you push them. i have several peonies from seed from china and they are much more vigorous than american seed. dj

Could someone give me details to planting peonies from seed?
I just cut the seed pods off of the plant. Now what do I do? Let them dry out completely? Then what?

If you want seeds, pods must be left on plant, and seeds collected in the fall.
If you don't want seeds, pods should be removed, as you have done, so that the plant will not waste energy producing unwanted seed.
