Suggestions needed

I just installed a planting bed that flanks my driveway. I have two smokebush shrubs on each end, and I've planted a row of salvia to fill the length in between. Salvia is nice, but I think a little too cottagey for my taste. I love heirloom plants, so I was thinking of planting peonies in this space, but the only experience I had with peonies was years back - it was loaded with ants, it bloomed for like a day or two, fell to the ground and that was that. Is this as good as it gets with peonies, or did I have bad luck, a bad variety, ????

I'd like a white variety. Any recommendations for my zone? I'll be planting these next to clematis vines as well (maybe).

Thanks for the feedback and or suggestions.

To give you suggestions it would be make it easier if you would tell us why you think you want a peony? Foliage, flower, cover up a space?

All of the above...and I love heirloom garden plants.

Hi, peonies like full sun. Mine is in the middle of my huge lawn, nothing by it. (I rent and it was there when I moved in, thinkin of moving it this fall).

They do get ants, they help to open them. The flowers don't last real long, but usually for more than a day or two.

If the flowers are real big, they can flop, and if they get water on the flowers (adding more weight) they will flop.

I put a cage around mine to keep it upright (easier to mow around too)

The nice thing about peonies is the foliage stays nice all season, so it does look nice when it's done flowering.

Make sure you follow the planting instructions as far as depth goes. I've also read if you remove some of the buds early it will make for stronger stems, bigger flowers and less apt to tip over. I haven't tried this but it sounds like it may be benificial.

It is my understanding that new/young plants don't flower so it may take a year or two to get flowers. depending on the age of the plant you buy. They also sell the bare root in a bag, if you don't want to buy the plant.

Hope this helps.

Yes, sadly, peony blooms don't last long. I use peony bushes as "shrubs" in the summer to hide my daylilies (whose foliage I find very unattractive!) which are in back of the peonies . But you can still see the daylilies' blooms above the peonies' foliage.
There are lots of single-flowering peonies which I've come to love better than the double blooms. The singles' blooms don't flop. "Krinkled White" is a popular white single. There are many pinks that are single blooms with lovely yellow stamens, like my "Doreen" below:
