OK to plant peonies with tomatoes?

I know it probably seems like a strange question, but I have a *small* community garden plot and am trying to figure out how to fit as much as I can in. My focus is on veggies and flowers for cutting. I'd like to put 4 peonies in a 4' x 8' raised bed (planting them staggered, centers 2'-3' apart on the diagonal) and plant tomatoes in the empty spaces (the same pattern) during the summer.

It's a full-sun bed, great drainage.

Do you think this will work? Any reason peonies and tomatoes wouldn't be compatible?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Alice
