I'm new to the peony forum. I have a white peony that I've had for a few years. It was so heavily scented that I had to move it far away from the house as I'm allergic to the perfume. Sorry--I'm not sure of the variety & no longer have the tag. It is so tall...I'm talking at least 5 foot stems and the flowers on top of that. Is that "normal"? Someone mentioned to me maybe it's not getting enough sun? Plenty of blooms & altho she is staked I'll need to find something taller to support this baby. Any input for this newbie is appreciated...

It would be great if you could post a picture of it. It's hard to say what it is, but tree peonies can grow that tall.

Are the stems smooth and green or green with red splotches or more brown and woody? Lucklein is right, tree peonies can easily grow that tall. If it has a woody stem that's the answer. I only have a few tree varieties but none of them need to be staked....

The stems do grow taller and scragglier if a herbaceous peony is in too much shade, though. Typically there will be a few tall, gangly stems and fewer blooms so not sure about yours since they seem to be blooming well. Maybe they're not way too shaded....A picture probably would be a lot of help!

Dear AJFan,

Yes! It is very likely NOT getting enough sun!

I say this because the stem/flower itself is literally 'stretching' up to find some rays (if the buds are small this is another indicator).

It is too bad you are allergic to fragrant peonies because they have such a lovely scent!

If you look at our site, you can 'not' use the drop down menu that says 'fragrant' and therefore look for peonies that are indeed, without fragrance.

Good luck! (http://www.purepeonies.com
