To cut or not to cut Peonies?

| I have a fungus on my 4 year old peonies (that started out blooming in early June). They have developed white mold and black spots on leaves and stems. It has rained constantly for two months. I fear that the soil may have a fungus. I sprayed with a fungacide but think it was too late. I was told not to cut the plant as it needed leaves to produce chloraphyll for next year. I love these plants and sure do not want ot lose them. I did cut off soome dead leaves but was waiting till the fall to cut to ground. What is your advice? |

| Your fungicide is a preventative to protect undamaged leaves, it kills the fungus but does not undo the damage. Damaged foliage is not helping the plant and is only a factory for more fungus. You will need to depend on stored energy in the roots for next years growth. Right now it is important to kill the fungus and prevent next years growth starting out infected. I would remove any infected foliage and spray the ground well with a Bordeaux mixture, which lasts longer in your rainy conditions. Al |
