Delaying peony blooms

Has anyone tried to delay peony blooms by keeping budded stems in a vase in the refrigerator? I have several peony plants which of course are beautiful when in bloom. My sister loves peonies and does not have plants of her own (lives in an apartment). For her annual visits, I have cut peony stems when they are in the budding stage and kept them in a vase with water in the refrigerator. I had heard that the blooms will open on being removed from the refrigerator, but have had limited success with this.

Has anyone had any luck with delaying peony blooms? If so, I would love to hear some hints.
