Need reassurance... (help)

My 8 peonies (I have no idea what types - just the pretty type) got what I think was powery mildew really badly even though I tried spraying them when I first noticed. So....I cut them all down to the ground...

1. Did they have leaves "long enough" to probably be able to bloom next year?

2. If I was not supossed to cut them down...what should I have done?

3. At this point, is there anything else I should do or not do?

If they were big enough to bloom this year they will probably bloom next year. Think of any cultural reasons for your mildew problem. Are they too close together so the air circulation could be limited? Are they being watered overhead and going into the night with wet foliage? Mildew needs to be avoided rather than remedied. Al
