Planting Peonies without eyes

I received a bag of peonies recently. I planted all the ones with eyes two to three inches deep as usual and I also had quite a number of tubers with no eyes. I planted these at the same depth as the others. Will these get eyes or just rot away? Thanks for any information you have about this subject.

I wanna thank you guys for posting info on growing peony roots without eyes. My brother dug up several heirloom plants (red, white, and rose color) put them in a bag and gave them to me. Well, some of the roots broke off and I was going to just discard them. SO GLAD I DIDN'T!! I actually had put them in the garbage container. After I read these posts, I jumped out of bed and dug in the container (it wasn't too bad) and pulled the plastic bag of roots out of there. I'll find a nice area to plant them and let you know how it goes. I have about four that are about an inch in diameter!

I'm glad you recovered them and are taking the chance, kplant! Just plant them horizontally if it's a single piece of root, about 2 inches deep. If it's a cluster where no eyes have formed yet just plant it like you would if it had eyes.

Did they grow? I just chopped my roots up by accident. Big mess of just Tubers. Going to move to a new location. I have tubers from 30 yr old planes. Didn’t think to be gentle and just shoveled out. I have buckets of Tibet’s size of sweet potatoes.

They Did! I have beautiful red and pink peonies. For some reason, the white ones didn't grow. So please, go ahead and get them in the ground and please be patient and you will be rewarded.

I also have some leftover that are just tubers. I kept the tubers in pots all winter, and some of them are developing white roots shooting off them....So I've kept them in the hopes they will sprout buds....

last year
I dug up a tuber a week ago with one eye, and started to let it dry in air inside house. i was going to wrap and store for the winter. now i wonder if i should plant it in ground again. i live in southern California.
