Yes! Fall is the best time to divide peonies.Just make sure you dig far enough from roots and keep divisions 3-5 eyes using clean knife. There are some great videos by searching Google videos peony dividing by Carol Adelman that I have seen on how to dig, divide and plant.

Should I wait until the foliage dies back. Its fall now and my peonies are still mostly green and just beginning to turn color before dying back. How long should I wait? I am in the Pacific Northwest (southwest Washington state).

I would say now is fine.I already recieved my Adelmans peonies and they are located in Oregon.I'm not to familar with your climate but in Maine the leaves are turning and we have already had our first frost.

Since most of the growers start digging the first of August you can use that as a guide. But if you do transplant at that time be certain to cut all foliage off your herbaceous peonies. Cutting the foliage off will send the peonies into dormancy. If your weather conditions cause new stems to form leave them alone until they freeze. For new growers of tree peonies you do not cut them back. If you remove any leaves left on after frost if you have a deer problem just cut the leaf off trying to leave the leaf stem. The leaf stems may act like a guard to keep deer from eating the terminal buds. If the deer are hungry only wrapping in wire fencing will help.
