| I'm pretty new to the world of peony so this maybe rather general, but what are the 3 most important factors(or could be a few more if you feel they are of equal importance) to having a healthy 'successful' peony?
Lets throw LOCATION out there for everyone since location location location is always important... but what would be your other top determining factors?
If you are going to include say 'moisture or watering, be specific.

| Select the correct kind for your area. This is sort of location but not planting location. If you have a long growing season sometimes the singles, japanese, and bombs will do better than the full doubles. This is caused by the area becomes too hot too quick and the blooms will either cook or the outside dry so the inside will not open. Do some study of the various types and kinds of peonies before you purchase. If you want fragarence select for that. If you don't like raggy plants look for ones that hold their leaves well. Keep your options open. If you see a peony that you like don't worry about what you read. Go for it. The most lovely tree peony I know is miss named but I want it. |

| I would add to prepare the planting site WELL. Peonies generally don't like to be disturbed, and the roots grow VERY deep (at least 2 feet down). If the root is planted in loose, properly prepared & amended soil it will grow much better. Like a grower wrote me in his planting instruction sent with the roots I ordered, "If you want a great peony plant prepare a great planting hole". |
