Powdery mildew-help!

I returned from vacation to find the leaves of my peonys COVERED with powdery mildew-the worst case I've ever seen! I cut them & bagged the leaves, I felt I had no choice. I usually cut them back after frost damage & was wondering if cutting them this early will damage them. They've been reliable bloomers & I hope they'll be ok next year. I knew it HAD to be done, but I hope it didn't harm them. Has anyone had to prune early & how did it turn out?
