Newbie's first peony

Hi,

We bought a root section of peony Sarah Bernhardt today. This is our very first peony, so just to make sure we do things right:

(1) Plant depth. The root's package says to plant 10cm (~4") deep, but online resources all say no more than 2" deep. I know tree roots hate to be buried too deep, so I rather err on the safe side. I only planted it 2" deep, with a few visible buds facing up - correct?

(2) Overwintering. We have not decided where to put the peonies eventually, so we planted the root in a pot. Does the plant require a cold winter treatment to trigger its growth? Can we leave the pot indoors and plant it in the ground next spring?

(3) Fertilization. We planted the root in standard potting soil. Should we fertilize it?

Thanks. All additional suggestions are appreciated.
