There is at this time no such thing as a blue peony. The ones that are advertised as blue are, following Chinese tradition, a lavender pink. The color is more pink than lavender. Three years ago wally world sold peonies for two years labeled as blue . I think they were Lavender Lady and Blue Lagoon. Both were lavender pink but many were sold on ebay as a true blue peony. The first year I purchased one on ebay at a stupid price because the seller assured me that it was blue and had grown in his grandmothers garden. The week after I received it I went to wally world and there the prize plant was for $5.00. Before word was passed some bidders paid $65+ for a $5.00 plant. The pictures used then are again being used to sell a "blue" peony. One of the members tracked the picture down and I believe it was a double tulip.

The pigment that causes blue is lacking or very faint in peonies. To develop a blue flowering peony will probably need a good chemical expert or a new virus causing a mutation.

Watch the nurseries in your area for end of season sales. You can find some good plants at reasonably prices. A good general information book is "Peonies" by Pamela McGeorge. The book provides information for what to look for in plants and suggestions on how to take care of them.
