white eyes/shoots on Bowl of Beauty?

Hi. I planted a Bowl of Beauty peony last year. It didn't flower but it grew healthy leaves and then died down as per usual in Autumn. It hasn't shooted yet and I was worried it had perished so I dug around gently in the soil with my hands until I found it. It appears to have white eyes/buds instead of pink ones. Is this possible and if so does anyone know why?

It sounds like you planted it too deep, don't worry about the buds color. All the climate I know about your area tells me not more than one inch of soil over the buds and maybe even none at all. Al
