Composting peony foliage

As part of my fall clean up, I have always cut and discarded all my peony foliage, whether or not it appears to be affected by disease (mostly powdery mildew). Is this necessary? Can I safely compost the healthy looking foliage, and only throw out foliage that has obvious signs of disease?

I don't see why not. Mine has always gone into the compost after the shredder with no disease problem later. Al
