Advice on planting Kaokumon

Hello,

I have read about planting TPs 4 ~ 6" above the graft union.

I have 2 Kaokumon Japanese TPs that are in 12" pots, I don't feel confident enough with Tree Peonies to remove enough soil to find the graft union, so, my question is, should I plant the same depth it is in the pot or deeper ?

I have heard some people say they plant up to the bottom leaf ( in my case this is 5" ) I am wondering if I should plant the same depth, up to the first leaf or somewhere in between.

When I called our county extension master gardener, she recommended that I plant at the depth it is in the pot, however, she admitted she did not know much about TPs, she only has herbaceous ones.

I appreciate any advice castiloga, maifleur, peonyman or any other experts out here can give.

TIA

Nam
