Peony rookie

I've just received a housewarming gift-- roots from Great-Auntie's festivus maximus. It started 100 years ago in Missouri, was split and loved in Minnesota and Connecticut. It has now arrived in Oklahoma, and I want to keep it going for another generation or two, but am afraid the climate is too harsh in the summer, too mild in the winter. When people say that peonies love full sun, do they mean full OKLAHOMA sun? (zone 7) Any other tips for a gardening rookie? I've been reading about hundred-dollar holes and all, but if anyone can give any Oklahoma-specific tips, I'd appreciate it!
