Just a thing I noticed about pepper flowers...

Well, I'm sure most people who learns about cotyledons would remember that monocots have 3/6 petals and dicots have 4/8 petals or something like that. The crazy thing is, with all my pepper plants, they have 4,5,6,7 (and one with 8) petals. So, the question is, What causes this inconsistency in petals? Has any study been done on it?
