Hope they all grow lots of pods for you guys.
Let me know if there are any crosses.
Some seeds I don't know if they were issolated or not from trades etc.
If you get an interesting cross I'd like to know what variety so I can re-lable the pack it came from.

So far nobody has told me they got crosses from any seeds I've sent out except the fish pepper which are now labled fish cross.
It is a tastey pepper and prolific too. I grow the cross every year.
I think it crossed with the Mexican Serrano or red chile.Probably the serrano.
A good juicey pod with moderate heat.I like it.
I think it has better flavor than the pure fish pepper.

    Enjoy your seeds.

Last year was my first year doing hot sauces. I tried out 4 or 5 just by looking up some recipes, making changes to them or just recipes from friends and family.

This year I have tweeked them all a bit from what I have heard last year and actually all the chile peppers I am growing is targted towards a specific hot sauce or salsa.

I picked up growing peppers just a hobby last year and I had so much fun growing peppers and making hot sauce I have a good amount planned for this year.

Here are the peppers I am growing this year for my hot sauces:

    Datil
    Yellow Habanero
    Peach Habanero
    Carribean Red Habanero
    Jamaican Brown
    Bhut Jolokia
    Naga Jolokia
    7 pod / 7 pot
    Trinidad Scorpion
    White Habanero
    Ring of Fire
    Kung Pao Hybrid
    Serrano del Sol
    Fish Pepper Cross

I'm lucky I don't get a winter here and I can grow some peppers through the winter like C.Baccatums,C. Pubescens and some Frutescens and Annuums.C.Chinense don't do well in cooler weather.
There are a lot of plants on the list that I can grow in smaller pots so they don't take much room,I can stack pots kitty corner on each other.
Small pots makes it easier to bring in some when they flower for seed.

Last Spring-my hardening off/start out area.
Plants get put all over the place eventually. Some stay under the shade cloth.

Growing so many different varieties .....will it not lead to cross pollination and dilution/hybridization of some or most varieties?

When I want seeds I put a 5 gal. paint strainer over the plant or a branch if I have to do it outside otherwise I move the plant inside and let it flower there.
Once I get pods started it goes back outside with the pods marked that were self pollinated-tie thread around the stems.
Thats why I only have a certain amount of varieties of seeds not 500+ varieties.

    The Big tree is a Habanero Arbol(not a C.Chinense).
PM me if you want seeds.
It grew about 4ft. the first year and up to about 9ft. the second. It grows wider than tall.
It had a haircut of about 3 ft. off the top and each side before this pic was taken.
This ones about 6 yrs. old.
There are 2nd and 3rd generation ones in the corner by the shed that were about 3 months old.
They need a new home if anyone in the Los Angeles,Ca. area wants them.Bring a nursery pot to replace the one it's in and they are yours.
The tree doesn't mind cold-actually likes it better than heat.Fruits 3-4 times a year.Couple gallons of pods each time.

    Good points=A year head start
Bad=Overwintering a monster (it has easily survived up to a week of freezing temps. but I don't know how much longer it could have lasted with those temps.)
It loves cool more than warm temps.Supposed to be from the Andes...
    My smallest is 4ft. tall.

To say I'm impressed would be a understatement. I think your container gardening skill matches your sense of variety. I'm in a container rut- can't grow anything unless it's in the ground or in one of my waterfarms. May I ask your preferred medium and method of fertilization?

  • smokemaster_2007

    last modified: 9 years ago

For winter plants I've been playing with 5 parts fine orchid bark,1 part peat.2 parts pearlite (or 1 part pearlite and 1 part pomice).

Water with 1/8th strength Fish emultion and Seaweed extract everytime I water.

I'll flood the pots every so often if I think I have a fertilizer buildup.

Summer plants get a mix of
50/50 potting mix and planter mix with about 1/3rd pearlite added.
If it still doesn't drain good enough I'll add fine orchid bark too.Planter mix is composted forestry products.

I still haven't found a GREAT potting mix that doesn't dry out in 100+ degree southern exposure summer heat but still isn't holding too much water during the winter.

Not going to clutter you all up over every one, but I do have to drop one initial update- five days, and I have multiple varieties (Caribbean Red, Orange Hab, Serrano) already germinating. Ten Smokemaster variety seedlings compared to one Chili Pepper Institute seedling. They're the real deal and I'm stoked- thanks again!

The orange habs if they were from me are probably some kind of cross but they are super prodctive.
Everyone who has grown them loves them.
I call them Mutant Orange Habaneros because some seeds grew several different pod shapes, sizes and color shades but all are super productive.
I try to separate them into color shade, size etc. when I've grown them out.
Last year I planted them too late and didn't get pods.
Plants seem to be disease resistant too.

The Bhuts I send out were from a plant grown from Pepper institute seeds. The plant was issolated so I think the seeds should be pure.
But Murphy's law still might apply. LOL

I hope you get lots of healthy plans that kick out the pods this season.

If anyone gets any crosses let me know so if I have any of that batch of seeds left I can re lable them acordingly.

I do a lot of trades so some seeds I don't know about the purity.
I only use what I was told were pure seeds or seeds from venders for trades so the trades should be pure.

Sasbe's contain anything I have a large quantity of.even if I'm not sure about purity because I haven't grown them out yet.
So far the fish pepper seeds are the only ones that I know some are crossed. Most aren't but some are.
I actually like the cross better for taste.
But most people got pure fish seeds according to those i've asked.
Maybe only 1 pod got crossed but it's mixed with the others from that harvest so I lable it as a cross to make sure nobody is dissapointed when the seeds don't grow pure plants.

If you get an interesting cross I'd like to get seeds from it in case I gave all mine away or it was the only cross in the batch.

    Enjoy your gardens.

Thats who I get seeds from.LOL

    Waiting on some S.Korean seeds.

And then there is the Peru thing comming up.

Need all colors of baseballs this time.
Some cool Baccatum pods might be nice to.
Just to take up the space between Rocoto pods.

Instead of a pickle jar I'll let her use one of my 7 gal. sparklets bottles that I use for brewing beer.

She might have to squish a few to get them through the neck though or cut them into quarters or hopefully 8ths if they are big enough.
That bottle might fit a few pods to get us through the season. :)

    cmpman1974,

What types of lights are you using to grow with?

    Thanks

smoke: Thanks for trying! lol...GW messages have been a bit flaky for me lately...or it just may have been our spam filter freaking out. =) Anyways, I have a good few hots growing this year. I'd love to grow (even if I don't eat any of them b/c of the heat) some Bhut Jolokia's. I'm also looking for a few nice colorful sweet peppers. I have all kinds of seeds (and a few seedlings) I can trade you for them. What are you looking for? Let me know.

    Thanks - Steve
