Bottom watering

Trying my luck with bottom watering (mainly peppers, but a few others I am doing this year). I'm having to do things on a budget this year by using Solo cups as planters. I have seen several techniques when using them to bottom water. Some drill holes on the bottom of the cup, around the bottom on the sides, around the middle of the cup, or a combo of holes on bottom with some on the side. Others will string tiki torch wick through the bottom holes to carry water. Which of these would be better suited for pepper starting,

Mine have holes on the bottom and work just fine.
They are in a 1020 tray and fill the tray up with about 1in of water about every 4 or 5 days

I also prefer bottom watering my seedlings. After they drink whatever they need, I drain the excess water.
This way the top of soil remains relatively dry. This is a good prevention for fungus gnats, that they prefer wet soil to get in and lay eggs.

I also bottom water my pepper seedlings/plants and drain excess water after 20 minutes or so...... I use mostly different sized plastic cups with several 1/4 inch holes in bottom. I prep all the cups outside in the fall with a soldering iron; depending on size of cup will determine # of holes.
