Digging animals, yellow fruit on an orange plant?

So I woke up this morning to a big hole in the middle of one side of my garden, and 4 of my pepper plants had been dug up, moved and buried. I suspect its my neighbor's (aunt) dog. She's convinced her little precious cannot and would not dig, and maybe she's right. But digging and burying seems more like a dog thing than a raccoon, possum, or rabbit thing. Especially since, other than having been badly handled, they are still in pretty good shape - no nibbles. Anything special I should do for them to help them recover?

Also on one of my un-affected plants, I picked a yellow habanero off of an orange hab plant. as you can see in the picture, the orange moves from the top to the bottom with a very thin line of yellow separating orange and green. So perhaps this one is just riding the short bus?

I put it on my window sill and will keep you posted... If it is really a yellow hab from an orange hab plant, will it grow yellow hab plants, or orange?

Here is a link that might be useful: Ripe, almost ripe, and yellow.

Tell your neighbor that you are relieved that it is definitely not her dog because you have committed to staking out your garden with a .22 for the next several days and you will be shooting the first animal that enters the perimeter and you are happy you won't be having to shoot little FIFI.

As far as color on the Habs goes, I would make sure you are not picking them before they are fully ripe. Peppers go through some weird color phases sometimes during the ripening process.

haha I actually said something similar. Except with my .38, I don't have a .22, just a near antique .38 semi auto. Hoping that solves the problem ;)

while it is unevenly yellow (brighter and darker in patches) there is no green left on it. Unlike the one in the middle, the yellow pod has no green on it what so ever.... But this is my thinking as well - and why I put it on the window sill.

haha, Bruce you are awful! I agree with Bruce on the color.

I'd advise chicken wire around the garden. I have a 3ft rail fence around mine, covered in chicken wire. It keeps out the rabbits, but my Kuvasz continually jump the fence. Couple of years ago I put powdered milk and epsom salts in the pepper holes at planting. Next day while I was at work and husband got home early, he let the dogs out and left them. When I got home my 6 month old puppy had jumped the fence and had dug up every single pepper to eat the powdered milk. :-( they were all dead by the time I found them.... surprisingly she is still alive and so is the husband.

That's happened to me before the culprit a squirrel, ours are dangerous they destroy our pumpkins we set out in the fall for decoration, they dig holes in the pumpkins guess after those seeds, they got to a few of my peppers, same results did not destroy the plant just dug it up. I used liquid fence around the outer part of the yard way away from my plants.

I don't know which rodents I hate worse, rabbits or squirrels. They are both so destructive. We were being over run with rabbits a couple of years ago, I haven't seen many lately. I've got some Keep Off but you have to keep it away from edibles and have to reapply it often.

Squirrels, they're too gamey. The rabbits are delicious though.

What? If you gotta get rid of them, don't let them go to waste! They're especially good if you cook them in some brown sugar baked beans.

Well as an update, today the pepper started to turn orange... So it just changed color differently than the others (which had little to no yellow at all).

Also on the "rodent" problem, after mentioning my plan to sit outside and shoot whatever rabbit or marsupial found there way into my garden - surprisingly (or not) I haven't had any problems with anything messing up my garden. I did notice that they aren't leaving "fifi" outside on his own any more.

Looks like one of the plants may die - it cast off all but two of its leaves today. So we shall see.

Good to see you solved the "fifi" issue....at least seemingly so. Sorry to hear about the sick plant. Give him a chance, they fake it a lot of times to get out of school.

I was really surprised when it asked me for a note for her teachers!

Use some of those hot peppers you grow to dose the garden with, it really does repel a lot of critters, tame and wild.

Thats a good plan... Will need to wait until some put out some fruit though. I've used up my pepper stash from last year... I was pretty much eating them as they came in though, so the stash was about 20 peppers in my freezer...
