It's starting... chili !!

| Hubby just brought over to the garage x the shed his home-made incubators so guess it must chili seed planting time! I must give him the seed packets of the tomato varieties I want him to start for me now. He said last year he started the seed middle of Feb. in the sponges x Park's (he swears by them!)& they get put in pans on heat mats in the insulated incubators under grow lights. When seeds germinate & seedlings are of a small size, he (I get to help!) places the sponges in individual styrofoam cups of potting soil with holes in the bottom on big trays that he keeps filled with fertilizer sol'n. in the incubators. The shop lights on timers w/grow bulbs can be adjusted as the seedlings grow.
After ? last frost, the plants go into the garden where we got 240 lbs. last year to freeze.
Will try the newest NMSU Big Jim & Heritage varieties this year along with Biker Billy Jals & our own un-named XX-tra HOT chili. The Bhut was ground to powder & lots of it left so no Bhut this year in the garden! The Bhut sure do have different growing behaviors & 'personalities'; can't confuse them with the others for sure! |

| Oh nice! I am very interested in the Heritage's taste. Please let us know how it goes. It's one I wanted to grow this year, but I never got around to snagging seed. Are you growing the "6-4" or the "Big Jim" line of Heritage peppers? |

| I checked with husband & he said this year will be the first time for the '6-4'Heritage green chili (supposed to have more of the old original NM green chili flavor & not so hot). He grew the Big Jim Heritage last year & will again this year. That Heritage seed is kinda $$ as was the Bhut from NMSU in Las Cruces, NM but had great germination. 'Big Jim', btw, was named after Jim Nakamora (?sp.) x NMSU who developed so many of the chili varieties now planted. You're in zone 7b? We are in zone 7 here ... on the maps Albuquerque is in that 'finger' zone that goes north up the Rio Grande Valley & are protected weather-wise by the mountains on the City's eastside. We are in the northeast heights area of the City at 5280 ft. elevation but have no problem growing most anything in the garden here IF we can escape those darn late Spring frosts that can occur unexpectedly in a single night! |
