seedlings update

peppernovice

Here's a quick shot of my progress so far. I planted initially on 1/26. I lost a couple seedlings to a curious Yorkie, so I re-planted a few on 2/9. I planted the last round on 3/9. That round included tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupes, and annums. I would have preferred to have planted the last round earlier, but I was out of town.

Peppernovice, everything is looking nice to me.

I see that you have them outside for the pic. Is straight, unfiltered sun better than sun coming through a screen room? Is it a big enough difference that i need to put them outside instead of inside away from insects?

Peppernovice, looks like you have a good system going there.

jifjifjif......I think it's best to try and limit the sunlight in the beginning. If your plants are fairly young, you would want to slowly introduce them to the sun. I'm sure you've heard the term "hardening off". I would say filtered sun is fine initially.
Thanks for the kind words Bruce.

Hi Tim great looking plants you've got. Wow already hardening them offf? I am in zone 7 and not even close to putting them outside, though i wish it was warmer now. Question for you, since you grow more than just peppers, I am starting some veg plants not for me but for family, would you start them the same as peppers? With 80 degree temps? I am growing tomato's and turnips.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Mark....I just put my veggies in a starter dome and set it on a shelf. My ambient temperature is about 70 degrees, and they sprouted in 4 to 5 days.
Thanks for the kind words Rick.

Mark, no, you would not start turnips the same as peppers. Turnips are a cool weather crop that down here come out of the ground about the time it is safe for peppers to be put in the ground. Or are a fall crop. There is a vegetable forum here, too, for those of you who are interested in more than peppers (and haven't been over there yet).

Tomatoes are similar to peppers but are less fussy at cooler temperatures. But they still do well with bottom heat at germination.

Tim, nice looking plants, I'm just curious why you started melons so early?

Sunnibel......Because I have no idea what I'm doing. I've never grown cantaloupes. I just assumed they were on the same time table as my other vegetables. I guess I should have done a little research.

Josh..... Thanks, but I assume your plants are far superior. It seems every time I start to pat myself on the back, you post pics and I have to go hide in a corner.

Tim, your disarmingly honest reply had me snort tea out my nose, kudos!

If you guys here can grow peppers successfully, you can likely grow anything. Peppers really take the longest time of any of the vegetables I grow to reach an age where they produce. On the down side, you may find yourselves giving too much love to a variety of plants that don't want as much from you as the peppers do!

Cantalopes are FAST. I plant my seeds outside at the end of May, harvest first melons 55-60 days later. To do that, though they need heat and lots of water while the vine is growing. Cut back on water once melons start forming or they could split, and nothing will make you sadder. Well, nothing except something bad happening to a beloved pepper plant. I know where your priorities lie. ;) Hope the tiny melon primer is helpful, cheers!

    Not this year, Tim ;-)
Your seedlings are far ahead of mine! I'm nursing mine along under a weak light set-up, hoping to get them some outdoor time soon. I haven't been fertilizing as much as I should have, either. But I'm sure they'll be nice plants by the time I move them out in late May/early June.

Sunnibel...Thank you for the information. I don't mind admitting when I don't know something. That's the only way I know how to learn. Admit you don't know, so someone who does can teach you. Glad I could make you giggle. :)

Josh....I'll have to write this down in my diary. I'm actually ahead of you for once. Of course, we both know the end product is what really counts. I'm sure your's will be impressive as usual.

Maple_grove....Thank you for the kind words.

I'll do my best not to let you down. It ain't over until the fat lady begs for some yogurt to dull the burn....

Here's some pics I snapped yesterday. They seem to be progressing nicely. I almost let them go too long without water. I need some better containers, but it's just too close to time for them to go outside. I'll just have to keep a better eye on them.

Looking good Tim. All of mine are out getting some sun and wind right now. Gonna give them 2 hours or so outside today. Hope to put out for good next weekend.

Wow Bill...sun, must be nice. It's been raining here since last night. I'm hoping it'll warm up this weekend so I can get my plants outside.
